Processing of sentences with predicate negation: The role of opposite predicates
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper we discuss the two-step simulation hypothesis of negation processing proposed by Kaup et al. [3,4] with regard to negating two sorts of predicates: those with clear opposites (“long” vs “short”, “closed” vs “open”) and those without clear opposites (“red”, “triangle”). The hypothesis by Kaup et alia predicts that negation is integrated into sentence meaning on the later stage of sentence processing, which involves that a comprehender of the sentence simulates the corresponding actual state of affairs. We suggest that, given the hypothesis is true, in the case of those predicates for which one can find in the language clear opposites, such a simulation is facilitated via identifying the negative of a given predicate with its opposite. In the case of predicates such as “red”, that lack of a clear opposite should make processing of the negative sentence more effortful.

Explicit and implicit negation , negative polarity , and levels of semantic representation
Most previous studies on negation have generally only focused on sentential negation (not), reporting cost and delay associated with computing its meaning. In an ERP study (Experiment 1), we make use of the negation-sensitivity of negative polarity items (NPIs) and examine the time course of processing different kinds of negation. Four kinds of NPI-licensing environments were examined: the nega...

Extracting structured information about entities from web texts is an important task in web mining, natural language processing, and information extraction. Information extraction is useful in many applications including search engines, question-answering systems, recommender systems, machine translation, etc. An information extraction system aims to identify the entities from the text and extr...

Introduction: Fundamental notions of mapping hypothesis and canonicity were scrutinized in Persian-speaking aphasics. Methods: To this end, the performance of four age-, education-, and gender matched Persian-speaking Broca's patients and eight matched healthy controls in diverse complex structures were compared via the conduction of two tasks of syntactic comprehension and grammaticality jud...
متن کاملExtraction of Drug-Drug Interaction from Literature through Detecting Linguistic-based Negation and Clause Dependency
Extracting biomedical relations such as drug-drug interaction (DDI) from text is an important task in biomedical NLP. Due to the large number of complex sentences in biomedical literature, researchers have employed some sentence simplification techniques to improve the performance of the relation extraction methods. However, due to difficulty of the task, there is no noteworthy improvement in t...
متن کاملMotivation for a New Semantics for Vagueness
Vagueness is the phenomenon that natural language predicates have borderline regions of applicability and that the boundaries of the borderline region are not determinable. A theory is presented which argues that vagueness is due to the fact that we are computationally bound by Church’s Thesis. Syntactic and semantic models motivated by the theory are introduced. Each disallows the use of class...
